Die Textgrundlage bildet dabei einerseits das Enzyklopädistik-Projekt des Allgemeinen Brouillon, in dem Novalis unter anderem die Mathematik auf ihre Eignung als Leitdisziplin befragt. Diese Befragung vollzieht sich nicht in einheitlicher, philosophisch-systematischer Weise, sondern erfolgt in vereinzelten praktischen Versuchen, mittels mathematischer, formaler Strukturen neues Wissen zu generieren. Grundlegend für die Argumentation ist dabei die those, dass sich das Enzyklopädistik-Projekt durch ein systematisches Bestreben auszeichnet, sich jedoch weniger als Entwurf, sondern vielmehr als Suche nach einem method des Wissens verstehen lässt.
Zum anderen untersucht die Studie, welche Bedeutung der Mathematik in Novalis' dezidiert literarischem Romanfragment Heinrich von Ofterdingen zukommt. Sie widerspricht der häufig geäußerten Forschungsmeinung, Novalis inszeniere im sogenannten Klingsohr-Märchen die Ablösung der Wissenschaft, insbesondere der Mathematik, durch die Poesie, und argumentiert, dass es sich stattdessen um eine integrative, synthetische Utopie handelt. Einen weiteren Schwerpunkt bildet das bislang vernachlässigte Verhältnis von Dichtung und Astronomie. Letztere nutzt Novalis, um eine vermögenspsychologische Utopie unter Verzicht auf diskursive Verhandlung erzählend zu gestalten. Er aktualisiert und narrativiert die Metapher des Theatrum astronomicum und schreibt dem Klingsohr-Märchen damit eine selbstreflexive size ein, die eine poetologische Lesart nahelegt.
