Den Kandidaten wird somit unterstellt, dass sie „entweder ein nicht existentes Erleben manifestieren oder ein existierendes Erleben [einer Emotion] reguliert manifestieren“ (ebd., 89). Ihr Emotions-ausdruck wird mit anderen Worten als „Stilisierung von Gefühlen“ und „Verwendung emotionaler Masken“ interpretiert (vgl. Drescher 2003, 77).
